REVERSE, SMK(P) St. George, Penang

Summary of Project:

We have conducted a project that focuses on helping students who lack motivation and have a short span of concentration using our REVERSE concept.

The REVERSE concept refers to:

R: Ready, suitable, fun and easy learning methods

E: Engage in hygienic and safety measures.

V: Value students' mental health and wellbeing.

E: Enrol in search for students' interests.

R: Reach for students' problems and guide them personally.

S: Set scope visions and academic goals.

E: Entering a focus point.

Our project consists of an Instagram platform where we post content on gadget addiction, handling exam stress, recovering from burnout, and motivational quotes. We also organized a mini-session where students can share their thoughts about gadget addiction and play some fun games together!

Problem Statement:

According to the results of our survey, our respondents have mentioned that their learning loss was mainly caused by gadget addiction and uncomfortable learning spaces/environments. They were also struggling with stress and anxiety due to expectations from family and other people around them.

With regards to learning loss, 41.7% of respondents indicated that they have been facing learning loss even before the pandemic. 68.1% of the respondents also indicated they are facing learning loss post-pandemic.

We believe this problem should be addressed in order to help students who are struggling to get back on track to get academic validation and maintain a healthy mindset.

Participants Demographics:

Our target participants are students who are struggling to get back on track to achieve academic validation and constantly maintain positive mental health and well-being at the same time.

A total of 72 students from our school and other schools have responded to our Google form survey which was shared before we began our project.

Our mini-session, titled "Connection & Content", was also attended by 8 students.

Project Impact & Impact Measurement Method:

We used Google form to create both Pre-Feedback and Post-Feedback forms so that we can compare the analytics and statistics based on answers by the respondents.

In summary, 70% of our participants managed to overcome their lack of motivation caused by gadget addiction through our REVERSE project. 78% of our participants also managed to overcome their lack of concentration caused by uncomfortable learning spaces/environment.

Last but not least, 41% of our participants indicated that they feel more motivated and less stressful for their learning recovery/progress by boosting their mental health.

For our mini-session, 4 out of 8 participants (50%) were sure that overcoming gadget addiction would be easier after the session, while 6 out of 8 participants (75%) said they will find themselves a more comfortable learning space /environment to boost their learning after the session.

All 8 participants of our mini-session were satisfied with the experience and will recommend our session to their friends in the future.

Hence, our REVERSE project managed to bring a positive impact for students who have been affected by their learning loss post-pandemic.

Changes Observed In Participants (Improvements/Progress):

Participants managed to overcome their gadget addiction that lead to lack of motivation in a more systematical manner.

Participants managed to overcome their uncomfortable learning spaces /environment problem that lead to lack of concentration more easily and effectively.

Participants get to boost their mental health by getting continuous proper guidance and tips from our REVERSE team through our social media account on Instagram, which is @reverse.sggs.

Participants get to express their emotions and feelings more openly and connect with each others' problems by interacting among themselves during the mini-session, titled "Connection & Content".

Participants get to generate ideas and opinions on overcoming others' learning losses and their own too through brainstorming session held during the mini-session.

According to our survey & feedback forms, participants feel more motivated and less stressed as they felt more understood and knowing that many other students are going through the same learning loss issue, which meant they're not alone in this learning recovery journey.

Challenges/Setbacks Faced:

We faced several challenges while executing our learning recovery project. The main one was getting permission from our school to carry out our project and to promote our social media account and mini help-each-other session in our school's group chat.

We went to the school office for about 4 weeks straight but still could not manage to meet the principal and senior assistant of co-curriculum because they were busy with official businesses and SPM trials. This delayed our project far behind the other teams and we were running out of time.

Thankfully, about less than 2 weeks before the project execution deadline, we managed to get permission from our school and started working on making our project a success.

We were in a rush but we didn't skip any plans we had for our project and our great teamwork put things in the right place. We delegated all the tasks and completed them in a short period of time which made us catch up with other teams too.

One week before the project execution timeline ends, we decided to carry out our initial plan to conduct a mini-session, titled "Connection & Content". We were chasing for time as we also had to wait for our school’s permission and this caused us to not reach as many students as we expected about our session.

Although we had more followers than expected on our social media page, we still couldn't manage to get more people to join our session.

However, we are thankful that the participants who did attend our session were very engaged. Everything went smoothly as planned.
