PINTAR, Kolej GENIUS@Pintar Negara, Selangor

Summary of Project:

PINTAR is an educational application and website which exist to help students who missed their classes due to reasons such as health issues, competitions, and many more.

Problem Statement:

We ideated this app because all of us had been joining a lot of competitions which required us to be absent from classes in order to prepare, which means we were left behind in our studies! We also know from firsthand experience how much it takes for a student to catch up with their studies again.

Hence, we created PINTAR to ease students’ problems in catching up and to make sure they are not left behind in their learning journey!

Participants Demographics:

Our targeted participants are students of Kolej GENIUS@Pintar Negara, UKM. PINTAR has succeeded in having 177 registered students, which is approximately 37% of all students in our school. All students from KGPN are invited to join and register themselves in PINTAR, and we accept students of any gender and age, ranging from 12 - 17 years old.

Project Impact & Impact Measurement Method:

We did a Pre-test and Post-test, as well as a Post-Survey Questionnaire. We found out that our participants have increased their average marks by 1.75 points. This is evidenced by the students' average increase from 2.59 (pre-test scores) to 4.34 (post-test scores), which is an increase of approximately 35%. Not just that, the improvement is also supported by the post-survey questionnaire, where more than 80% of the respondents said that PINTAR has positively impacted their study.

Changes Observed In Participants (Improvements/Progress):

This changes we observed can be broken down into 3 components: developing PINTAR, the school's opinion, and students' cooperation. Let's go through them one by one!

Developing PINTAR: At first, we did not think it would be that difficult to develop an application, but once we began our project, we realize how much time it would actually take and how expensive it was. Hence, to adapt to this, we had to make a significant change to our plan where we would release a web version alongside the application. This impacted the participants by giving them a different user experience.

The school's opinion: We also found out that it was very difficult and time-consuming to work with our teacher who is so much busier as they have to administrate the school. Even though we understand that they have other commitments, this still impacted our participants as we lacked the school support in developing and marketing PINTAR.

Students' cooperation: We did not expect most of the students would give their full cooperation to PINTAR. This made our progress with PINTAR throughout this one month super well, and it was able to impact the participant positively too!

Challenges/Setbacks Faced:

Some of the challenges/setbacks that we had to face were lack of knowledge in developing an application. To overcome this, we utilized existing technology that can change a website into an application instead of building one from scratch!

This helped us a lot as we do not need to have thorough knowledge about coding to contribute towards this project.

Another challenge was that we had a lot of assignments that had due dates very close to each other, as well as school activities that make our schedule super packed to develop PINTAR. Even so, we managed to overcome it with the help of our mentor and teacher-in-charge!
