CAPSULE, Nobel International School, Selangor

Summary of Project:

CAPSULE is a website that provides summarised Science notes in the form of words, videos and quizzes for Year 8 & Year 9 students that caters to the different learning styles. CAPSULE also has a community chat for students to discuss different Science topics that they may not be that well-versed in.

Problem Statement:

We created this learning recovery project because we saw our friends with great potential to achieve success give up due to the learning loss they faced during the pandemic. One of their challenges were not being able to find platforms that provide study materials. Not only that, we also want to address another cause of learning loss (other than the pandemic), which is mental health. Thus, we created a safe space for students to talk their hearts out and give them an opportunity to identify if they need professional help.

Participants Demographics:

Our target group for this project are Year 8 & Year 9 students, and we have a total of 288 students who use CAPSULE to date. We found that almost 50% of students who spent time on CAPSULE were able to improve their studies. We estimate that there will be 300 new students using CAPSULE every year.

We also interviewed 2 participants ( both Year 9 students) who are actively using CAPSULE every day to catch up on their studies.

Project Impact & Impact Measurement Method:

We measured the impact of our project using these following metrics:

  1. Number of participants who did the quizzes

  2. Number of participants who visited CAPSULE

  3. How many times was CAPSULE used (in 2-3 weeks)

  4. Average time spent on CAPSULE (in 2-3 weeks)

  5. Participants’ feedback on CAPSULE (interviews)

Changes Observed In Participants (Improvements/Progress):

As the project progressed, the participants seemed to develop a slightly higher interest in Science topics as they go through the Science notes. Originally, we thought students would use CAPSULE purely for academic purposes, but our presentation during school assembly sparked a lot of conversation and interest. It surprised us to find out that the students would check out the site of their own accord. We observed this through the excitement the students expressed during the assembly launch.

Challenges/Setbacks Faced:

The biggest setback we faced was setting a time with our school’s management to launch the website during assembly. We sent them an email a few weeks before our expected launch date but they did not responded. To tackle this issue, we kept on going to the management office once every 2-3 days to ask for updates. Finally, after 3 weeks of consistent following up, they finally approved our launch and gave us a date.
