Biobadge!, Kolej Yayasan Saad, Melaka

Summary of Project:

BioBadge! is a fun and interactive Taboo-card game - a learning experience to help our students get back on track.

Problem Statement:

The problem students are facing especially during examination is to understand and memorize the key terms in a subject (eg. Biology - cellular respiration, photosynthesis, etc.). This learning recovery project was created to help students memorize these terms better by playing a Taboo card game for a fun and interactive approach for learning. Players of this card game are able to get a better understanding of key terms in a more fun way and improve their learning.

Participants Demographics:

Our participants are 15 years old, consists of both male and female students, have a mixed learning style (consists of both active and passive learners), and are highly engaged participants.

Project Impact & Impact Measurement Method:

Google forms were used to collect data pre-project and post-project. We did a short, simple test before and after our project to get an idea on our participants' understanding in Biology and to measure the impact of our game. For the pre-project test, our participants scored an average of 53/100, but this took a turn for the better as they scored an average of 89/100 for our post-project test. The average student growth after both tests is 30% and we also had interviews with 4 participants to get their feedback to better understand the impact from our project.

Changes Observed In Participants (Improvements/Progress):

Our group did not expect that our participants were able to enhance the gameplay by themselves. They were able to guess the words described in the card faster, and they were also able to explain the key terms in a very descriptive and elaborate way as our project progressed. This definitely has helped all our participants to boost their knowledge and understanding in Biology better.

Challenges/Setbacks Faced:

One of the biggest challenges we faced while executing this project is time management. All three of us are involved in one or more clubs at school, and we had to juggle so many different activities and examinations while executing our project. We were able to overcome this problem however by making a strict schedule on when to discuss and execute the project. Meetings with our mentor, Mr. Abhijith, also helped a lot in our project execution and ideation and helped us to overcome other minor setbacks while executing this project.
