SRN, SMK Pasir Gudang 3, Johor

Summary of Project:

SRN is a mentor-mentee program that aims to improve Form 4 students' academic results by using various interesting and interactive methods, such as quizzes, puzzles, and treasure hunts, to help students in their learning.

The mentors of the programme were recruited from first class students, and they will each mentor 2-3 students from weaker classes; they will be in a group throughout the program. The mentor will guide the mentees and work together as a group to carry out the tasks given.

Problem Statement:

We organized this program to help Form 4 students overcome the problem of learning loss. This program aims to help students who are weak in learning, and indirectly also help the mentors be aware of any mistakes in their own learning.

We observed that a lot of Form 4 students in our school are still unable to adjust themselves to learn new topics for upper secondary because they have missed out on Form 2 and Form 3 topics, and are now struggling to catch up.

Participants Demographics:

A total of 68 Form 4 students participated in our Mentor & Mentee program. Participants consist of both male and female students. There were a total of 23 Mentors, 42 Mentees, and 3 Assistants.

The level of involvement of the mentors was very good because all the mentors were fully present for every meeting and we're very committed to the program.

The level of involvement of the mentees was also very good because almost 50% of the mentees were present at every meeting and only a minority of them were absent once. Each participant cooperated very well and was active in doing the activities that had been prepared.

Project Impact & Impact Measurement Method:

We use the Pre- & Post-Test method to measure the impact of this project. The average growth of student performance in the field of academic improvement is 16.25% for Math and 12% for English.

Changes Observed In Participants (Improvements/Progress):

We have received praises from teachers at our school about the success of this program in helping Form 4 students with their end-of-year exams.

There were some participants who showed their maturity in answering questions and did not leave blank questions like before.

In addition, there were also participants who said that our program has helped them a lot in answering final exam questions.

Finally, during the English speaking test, many participants said that the speaking activities conducted by us made them speak fluently and confidently.

Challenges/Setbacks Faced:

Many of our participants were unable to attend the first meeting due to heavy rain. We decided to continue the activity and gave the opportunity to other participants to attend when the rain subsided.

We did not have much time because it was almost exam week so we had to start our program as soon as possible before exam week.

We also had to control 68 participants but we managed to calm down and control all the participants in an orderly and calm situation.

We needed to think of ideas for interesting activities for the sessions of this program. So, we used internet resources and the opinions of people around us to plan interesting activities to carry out in this M&M program.
